[18F]MK-0947 is a novel, second-generation small molecule positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer developed by Merck in collaboration with Invicro. It is specifically designed to visualize and quantify alpha-synuclein aggregates, which are the hallmark pathological protein deposits in Parkinson's disease and other synucleinopathies. Labeled with the radioisotope fluorine-18 (18F), the tracer offers high affinity and selectivity for alpha-synuclein over other protein aggregates like amyloid-beta or tau, addressing off-target binding issues seen in earlier candidates such as MK-7337. It is currently in Phase 1 clinical development to evaluate its safety, pharmacokinetics, and diagnostic potential in patients with Parkinson's disease and healthy volunteers.
